Weekend In Oslo (Oric)
A downloadable game for Windows
This is a game for the Oric retro computer (1983), it can ran on a real machine, but you can also use the bundled emulator that comes in the archive.
This game was written over a week end for the 2015 Global Game Jam.
(You can read more about it on the blog post I wrote back then.)
My game is not extraordinary by any means, but I tried my best at being as close from the topic as possible, which is why my game is all about tourists visiting Oslo and wondering what to do next. Most of the assets were done by resizing and converting to black and white pictures I selected on Google Image. I had to do that because I did the game in solo: I had to do all the code, design and art.
The game is kind of basic, and involves traveling to different locations in Oslo, visit them while keeping the budget under control, and making sure you go back to your starting point before 48hours have elapsed. I did manage to add to the challenge trying to get as many diversifiers3 as possible:
- NES: Make the game playable on an old school console, either directly or through an emulator.
- Eagle Ear: The game is primarily visual, but is also playable by visually impaired players, either through audio design, or through a screen-reader (VoiceOver, Talkback, JAWS etc).
- Public Domain Class of 2015: Make a game based on the works entered to Public Domain on 1st January 2015, for instance works of Wassily Kandinsky, Edvard Munch, Edith Sitwell, Piet Mondrian, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Felix Nussbaum, Filippo Tommaso Emilio Marinetti, Glenn Miller, Flannery O’Connor, or Ian Fleming.
- Hyper-Local: The game is set in your town/city and contains elements locals can identify, while still being entertaining for a global audience.
The first one is kind of obvious: It ran on an Oric (for real) with a joystick. For the second one, well, it's mostly a text adventure game where all the possible options are written, which means that if a screen-reader had existed for the Oric it would have worked. For the third one: In the game you can visit both the Munch Museum and the Oslo National Gallery, which are two of the places where you can see the famous "The Scream" painting. The last one should be evident as well: It's a game about a 48 hours deadline happening in Oslo written by a guy in Oslo with a 48 hours deadline. Can't be possibly more meta than that :D4
